Way Too Early Convention Preview

Why plan for late October when it’s barely May? Let’s say the time is ticking and we who are members of the American Council of the Blind-Indiana have a joint affiliate convention with ACB-Ohio to plan.

We’ll be meeting this year in Indianapolis from October 25-27. So stay tuned for news about registration and updates.

This year’s theme? Transforming Attitudes! We plan on having sessions on cooking while blind, keeping positive in our advocacy, updates on the various centers for independent living (CIL’s) that welcome people having all kinds of physical and cognitive disabilities…and so much more.

We’ll even be having a trip to the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis which, if you’ve been to the Circle City here in Indiana, you know it’s not just for children. Word has it that the dinosaur area will be very tactile. So convention-goers can enjoy the Friday afternoon there with their families or by themselves.

Add to that, we hope to have exhibits and a break-out session geared for parents of blind children. After all, whether your child goes to public or private school or will attend the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI), you as a parent are bound to face a myriad of questions and concerns.

One of the highlights for me and many consumer organization convention-goers is the exhibit hall. And why not? We’ll have gadgets, gismos, and grab bags of every type from the techy computer nerd’s fascination to the practical hands-on kitchen accessories and guide dog swag.

Being the vendor coordinator this year, I can’t wait to see how that exhibit hall takes shape as I get commitments, questions, and comments rolling in.
